Gastone Novelli (Vienna 1925 - Milan 1968) Italian painter. In the early 1950s he was in contact with the group of Roman abstract painters of “Forma”. In 1957, together with Perilli, he directed the magazine "L’esperienza moderna." After his informal period, his most significant production took shape from 1958, like a sort of painting-writing also linked to relations of cultural exchange with the poets of the Gruppo63 and interwoven with similar outcomes of American painting (in particular Cy Twombly). In his paintings he used signs, letters, segments, encryptions, hieroglyphics and punctuation, linguistic atoms just as they are found on the walls of derelict buildings, bearing traces of the elapsing of time and history, great blackboards which accommodate humanity’s outpourings in the urban reality, which make them at once special and poetic.
